Olomouc

Olomouc

Stop by in summer and winter in Olomouc and you won't regret it! You'll find a whole host of historical sights, including UNESCO sculptures, romantic streets and corners, parks and gardens, lots of entertainment, and good food and drink. It's no coincidence that Olomouc is called "Little Prague". Here you don't have to worry about crowds and exorbitant prices. Olomouc offers high-quality accommodation and gastronomy. And you certainly won't be bored!

The hidden gem of Europe

The university town of Olomouc is the largest urban conservation area in the Czech Republic after Prague. Olomouc's landmark, the Holy Trinity Column, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The Lonely Planet tourist guide even named Olomouc as No. 1 of the 50 Secret Gems of Europe.

"Unlike Prague, there are still relatively few tourists here. With 100,000 permanent residents and 21,000 university students, Olomouc offers a small-scale taste of Prague's history and architecture, as well as plenty of fun in a student town and great places to eat and drink," Evan Rail for The New York Times

What you need to see

"We recommend coming to Olomouc for at least two full days to see and experience what this amazing city has to offer."  @boboandchichi

Olomouc's most important sights are concentrated in the area of Upper, Lower, and Wenceslas Square. The Upper Square is dominated by the Column of the Holy Trinity (UNESCO) and the Town Hall building with the astronomical clock. The Upper Square and the neighbouring Lower Square are surrounded by fountains with ancient themes and Renaissance and Baroque palaces telling the story of the city's rich history. Just a few steps away from the Upper Square you will come across the exceptional Gothic building of St. Moritz Church with its lookout tower.

Between Upper and Lower Square, you can wander through the romantic streets where you will discover the Church of St. Michael, the Chapel of St. John Sarkander, or the Art Nouveau Villa Primavesi.

Then, as you pass through University Street, continue along the tram line and climb up Dómská Street, you'll see the monumental neo-Gothic St. Wenceslas Cathedral and the grounds of the former Bishop's Palace, now home to the Archdiocesan Museum.

"Olomouc is one of the most historic and spiritual cities in the Czech Republic, and if you really want to immerse yourself in its history, a visit to the Archdiocesan Museum is one of the most interesting things you can do in Olomouc."  @swedishnomad
