On the site of today's chapel, there used to be a town prison where the Catholic priest Jan Sarkander, to whom the chapel is dedicated, was martyred in 1620.
In the chapel's basement, there is an original torture scraper and a well-built over the "miraculous healing spring" from which Jan Sarkander drank in prison. The Chapel of St. John Sarkander is located right in the center of Olomouc, just a few meters from the UNESCO monument - the Holy Trinity Column. Today you can see the chapel in its reconstructed neo-Baroque form. Thanks to the cupola with a lantern, daylight penetrates the chapel and brightens even its basement. In front of the chapel, you will find a fountain by sculptor Otmar Oliva, depicting good and evil.
