Olomouc and surroundings: Tips for families with children

A historic centre with a UNESCO World Heritage Site, romantic streets, flowering parks and gardens, lots of entertainment and good food and drink. It is no coincidence that Olomouc is called "Little Prague".

Play detective with your kids, explore the city with Ola the cat, and get symbols from 10 stations. Just pick up the game map at the Information Centre in the Town Hall archway. How must little Mozart have felt in quarantine when he stayed with his family in Olomouc? Download the Hidden Stories app and follow in the footsteps of the famous composer! You can also get to know Olomouc unconventionally. Every Thursday in the summer season, a tourist train regularly crosses the city, departing from Dolní náměstí. Or board the Olo-boat Marie Terezie, where you can learn the most interesting things about Olomouc's history from the captain and enjoy an hour-long cruise on the Morava River. Reservations can conveniently be made online. After climbing a few dozen steps to the top of the observation tower of St. Moritz Church or Olomouc City Hall, you can enjoy the city from a bird's eye view.

How about exploring not only the history of the city together but even the whole world? In the interactive science museum of the Fortress of Knowledge, you will enter the human brain, be transported into space, or experience astronaut training first-hand thanks to the gyroscope. Meet the fantastical Guardians of Knowledge and join them in their fight against stupidity and darkness! Request a comic book team of animal superheroes to guide you through the exhibitions at the museum's ticket office.

Boys of any age shouldn't miss the Veteran Arena with its truly unique collection of 160 vintage cars and motorcycles. You can also experience a taste of wild nature in the heart of the city. The interactive natural history exhibition of the Museum of Natural History in Olomouc is one of the most modern in the Czech Republic!

Even in the city, it's possible to spend the whole day by the water! In Aquapark Olomouc you can have fun on water slides, water slides, and in the 3D rope maze. Parents will probably appreciate relaxing in the massage pool, whirlpool, steam bath, or sauna.

Have you ever tried to escape from inside a locked room? No, the solution is not jumping out the window, but working together and communicating. Try to solve puzzles and logic problems together within an hour to find the key to freedom. Become Escape Masters or turn into pirates in the Dead Corsair Escape Game.

From here, it's just a step to virtual reality, where you can become whoever you want! Classic shooters, simulators, combat, puzzle, and motion games in the world of VR introduce a new dimension of fun for young and old alike. Two complete VR sets and dozens of games are ready for you at two locations in the city center - Laser Mania and the BEST sports center.

And now something for the hardy individuals who are brave enough to try to save the world from bloodthirsty zombies or find themselves in a place inspired by the famous horror movies Saw and Hostel. In The Haunted House, you get to influence the plot, and even kids can get you in deep trouble! Children aged 9 and up should be able to play both games without any lasting psychological effects...

How does it feel to come face-to-face with a wolf? Find out at the ZOO on Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc! A secure safari train will take you to a large enclosure with eight wolves. The Olomouc Zoo is gradually turning into a safari with more attractive enclosures simulating the natural environment of animals in the wild from all continents of the world. After Eurasia and Africa, the Americas opened in 2020 with the first wolf safari in the Czech Republic. The rarities of the zoo also include a walk-through macaque enclosure or a darkened bat pavilion where nocturnal creatures fly right over your head. During your walk among the 350 species of animals, stop by the Lanáček children's rope center with obstacles, a slide, and a cable car, and climb the observation tower, unique in a zoo in the Czech Republic.

From Svatý Kopeček continue 12 km to the Hlubočky Ski Resort, grab on tightly, and enjoy an adrenaline ride on the bobsleigh track! More than a kilometer of downhill, 17 turns, and 2 360° turns await you. You can control the speed and style of the ride yourself with the handbrake and the tilt in the turns. Younger children can ride the two-seater bobsled, while the bigger ones can whizz down on their own. Believe it or not, there's a different bobsleigh track less than 8 km away. But the Hrubá Voda Resort offers even more than just that! Climb the 13 m high Kamzík Trail, compete in disc golf, practice archery, rent bikes or e-bikes, ride horses and ponies, and discover the beautiful surrounding nature. There's no need to rush home. Stay in the comfortable Wellness Hotel Hluboký dvůr or modern family apartment cottages and relax in the evening in the wellness and sauna world.

On your way back to Olomouc, make a stop at the Hostinův Důl equestrian complex in Tršice, where you will get acquainted with the noble horses of the Hungarian Kisberi breed. Maybe it will be here that you awaken a love for horses in your children. If the children can't tear themselves away from the horses, that's fine. You can stay overnight in a family-run guesthouse overlooking the riding arena. I'm sure you've heard of Anne Frank. A boy with a similar fate hid in the local woods during World War II. Like Anne, he recorded his story in a diary. And Otto Wolf didn't live to see the end of the war either. A memorial was placed in his memory in the Tršice forest, just a few minutes walk from the equestrian area.

Take out your bikes as well and head to Sluňákov in Horka nad Moravou! Mere 8 km from Olomouc you will pass through the gate to the the Litovel Morava Riverlands Protected Nature Area. You'll find yourself in the Garden of Eden and get a glimpse into the heart of the Sun Mountain of Dreams. The structures by renowned Czech artists that are scattered right in front of the Sluňákov Centre for Ecological Activities form a unique gallery in nature together. Stop by the local information centre for the keys to the secure exhibitions or book a guided tour, play a game of hide-and-seek, or don an explorer's satchel and set out to explore the surrounding nature. The return trip back to Olomouc doesn't have to be by land. IN LIFE will bring you rafts and you can float down the most beautiful stretch of the Morava River from Horka nad Moravou.
