The caves and their surroundings used to be the oldest and largest Cro-Magnon settlement in Europe.
The world importance of the caves is also evidenced by the findings from the Stone Age, the bones of a mammoth or a cave lion. A world-famous archaeological site is the Dome of the Dead with the remains of hearths and bones of prehistoric animals and reconstructions of ancient rituals. Among the most beautiful and almost intact spaces are the Temple of Nature or the Virgin's Cave. The dominant feature and symbol of the underground system is a stalagmite over two metres high called the Mummy.
The visitor circuit with a small archaeological exhibition is 380 metres long (about 40 minutes).
